Commuting on the Blue Line from University City
The LYNX Blue Line Extension opened in 2018, connecting University City and UNC Charlotte to NoDa, Uptown, and South End. For people who live or work near a station, it can replace a daily drive. For many others, it's a useful option a few times a month.

We avoid quoting a single commute time because it depends on where you start, where you're going, and when. Use CATS's official trip planner for your actual trip.
Stations in and near University City
Stations serving the area include Old Concord Road, Tom Hunter, University City Blvd, McCullough, JW Clay Blvd/UNC Charlotte, and the UNC Charlotte–Main terminus on campus. Some stations offer park-and-ride lots; confirm current parking with CATS.
Who it works well for
- People within a comfortable, safe walk of a station.
- Commuters heading to Uptown or South End with expensive parking at the destination.
- Event-goers attending Uptown games or concerts.
- Students and staff traveling to and from campus.
How to evaluate a specific home
Map the actual walking route from the front door to the platform, not the straight-line distance. Note crossings of wide arterials, sidewalk gaps, and lighting. Then try the trip at the hour you'd actually ride.
Driving instead
I-85 and I-485 provide regional access by car. Drive times to Uptown vary widely with traffic. Check live conditions on DriveNC before you commit to a routine.
